For decades, the art world operated under a double erasure. To be Black and gay was to exist in the margins of the margins—visible enough to be exploited for exoticism, but rarely celebrated as the author of one’s own image.

Here is how contemporary artists are breaking the frame. Historically, Western art separated the Black body (labor) from the queer body (sin). Today’s artists are joyfully collapsing that binary. Consider the work of Texas Isaiah , whose intimate portraits of transmasculine figures become altarpieces.
