The first certainty lived in the slammed doors of their cramped trailer outside Tucson. The second lived in a dusty cardboard box Leo found at a garage sale. He looked around, disoriented. Then he saw Leo’s father snoring on the couch. His expression softened.

Leo’s father stirred. The man from the disk smiled, walked to the front door, and stepped outside into the monsoon rain. By the time Leo reached the porch, the street was empty.
