After completing his medical studies, John Dolittle returned to Puddleby-on-the-Swallow to establish his practice. However as he began to tend to the medical needs of the townspeople, he discovered that his true calling lay in helping animals. He soon found himself spending more and more time with the creatures of the forest, learning their languages, and understanding their thoughts and feelings.
