They eventually settle in a college town. Lolita grows increasingly unhappy, rebellious, and demands money to save for a secret escape. She begins receiving small sums of money from a mysterious stranger — later revealed to be the playwright Clare Quilty, who has been following them.

Humbert retrieves Lolita from summer camp. They embark on a cross-country road trip, during which he manipulates her into a sexual relationship, framing it as the "games" of a devoted stepfather.
