If you sit down to watch DreamWorks’ Orion and the Dark expecting that tired trope, you are in for a beautiful, existential, and surprisingly profound surprise.

Written by Charlie Kaufman ( Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Being John Malkovich ) and based on Emma Yarlett’s book, this film isn’t really about a boy who is afraid of shadows.
