Manuela returned to Madrid alone. But she left the notebook behind.
“Neither are you,” Manuela said. “But our son is.”
“I wanted to protect him.”
The father’s name was Lola. Not Lorenzo, not Luis. Lola. A woman now. A transgender woman who had left Manuela when Esteban was a baby, fleeing to Barcelona to live her truth. Esteban never knew.
